Anna and Jaken’s First Wedding Anniversary Celebration

As wedding photographers, you know you’ve found success when the couples you work with are the kind of people you find joy in being around. From their wedding day to a virtual coffee date with Anna during the pandemic, there’s no doubt: Anna and Jaken are amazing, thoughtful, and can make a whole room smile with their laughter.

Almost exactly a year after their wedding, we had the opportunity to photograph Anna and Jaken again. These two did not have the first year of marriage they had expected – just a month after their wedding is when lockdowns started in the United States – but we could tell that their relationship had strengthened out of that experience together.

Life is unpredictable. No matter how prepared you think you are or try to be, there are always things that will be out of your control. You might spend your first year of marriage in a worldwide pandemic, but having the one you love by your side makes the unexpected feel a little more comfortable.

Our takeaway from this past year? Document all the moments. With a phone camera, with your point-and-shoot – whatever you’ve got. Take pictures and journal and remember what it was like to make it through both tough times as well as the happy times as a pair. Looking back through photographs of life’s unpredictable journey will remind you of how you’ve gotten to where you are – and why you love each other so incredibly much.
